Elevador de Santa Justa

I take the ride up the Santa Justa Elevator. It was designed by an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, a chap named Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, and completed in 1902.

The 45 meters lift drops me by earthquake-hit Convento do Carmo, a site I visited last week.

The Alfama

The Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, where one might visit a Fado house today. Over the video is the great Amália Rodrigues, queen of the Fado.

I roam the arty and convenient Lisbon Metro. I like to compare Metro systems. This one ranks high.

Parque das Nações

I ride the Telecabine along the Tagus River at the Parque das Nações. On the right side in the distance is the Vasco da Gama bridge, the longest bridge in Europe, stretching 17km and completed for the 1998 World Expo.

São Bento Palace

São Bento Palace is home to the Portuguese parliament (Assembleia da República) since the Liberal Revolution of 1820; it originated as a monastery in 1598.

Oceanário de Lisboa

I visit the Oceanário de Lisboa, the second largest Oceanarium in the world (behind Osaka’s), and mingle with some rather amazing creatures of the sea, and a few penguins of course.
